The Turkish District
From the Áyios Lázaros church starts the Turkish district, reaching to the fishing harbour. The district is dominated by the old Turkish houses which make people think about their high financial status. In the district there is also the old Holy Cross Church which nowadays serves as Cami Kebir mosque. The mosque is open for visitors every day, except during the services. Unfortunatelly, minaret is in rather bad condition, that is why it is not used as a viewing tower. Close to the mosque there is a fort which in the past was the Lusignans’ fortress. The British used this fortress as a prison before the Second World War. Nowadays the building is almost empty – inside there is only a small museum which presents some relics from Kioton, and Hala Sultan mosque situated on the first floor. Sometimes the fortress is used as a place for parties and at these moments one can walk on the courtyard.
