St. Lasarus’s Church

Among many monuments recommeneded by the tour guides, there is the St. Lasarus’s Church (Áyios Lázaros), situated between the old Turkish district and the market district. The church was built in the IXth century in order to keep the found remains of St. Lasarus. The church is marked by a beautiful bell-tower which miraculously survived the Turkish occupation. Nowadays, after the 1970 fire, the inside of the church is characterised by the stony austerity. The only things that may be admired are beautiful dome and the previously mentioned bell-tower. Under the altar we may find a crypt in which the remains of St. Lasarus were placed. In the Xth century they were taken away from the temple. The church is also a burial place of some of town’s celebrities.
