Kition
The present Larnaca is situated on the ancient Kition which used to be very important Cypriot city. In the XIXth century British people used the rubble left after the old houses in order to fight the malaric swamps and nowadays the excavations are being conducted on the sparse parts of land on which there were no buildings constructed. The area which is to be checked was divided into three zones, and only one of them is open for tourists. The second zone, situated behind the Archiepiskópou Kypriánou has been made accessible for tourists – if you pay a small amount of money you are able to observe archeologists from the wooden scaffoldings. Unfortunately, the old Phoenician constructions which are examined by the specialists have not been provided with any descriptions and the tourist, without the guide’s help, will not learn much.
